Max Fisher approaches Psy’s “Gangnam Style” like so many other mainstream American writers who fail to research K-pop: using condescension in an attempt to be entertaining.  What makes this story somewhat different is an attempt to explore the meaning of Psy’s satire in terms of Korean culture.  However, the comments after the story reflect varying opinions on the success of the analysis.

Dr. Crystal Anderson, Associate Professor of English, publishes her research in a medium that many scholars avoid: A blog.

Anderson, who teaches classes in Asian film and literature, stumbled upon “Kpop,” or Korean popular music that is part of culture (“Hallyu,” a cultural movement) that strives to spread Korean culture throughout the globe through music, film and television. As she continued to explore Kpop, she found that there was no centralized place to get information. She launched her blog, Kpop Kollective, as both a vehicle for her research and as an online Kpop information hub that fosters collaboration.

Changes Coming to High Yellow

What, again? Yes, but it will make High Yellow even BETTER, or at least with more frequent new stuff.  I’m just migrating stuff from one of my many OTHER blogs here. So you’ll see more stuff, and still the same wacky wuxia, Asian film and popular culture stuff that you have come to love. This is absolutely not a cheap attempt for me to try yet another new WordPress theme either.

I’m just going to put it out there….I’m a black woman living in the United States who loves Asian film.  While I can’t approach the encyclopedic knowledge of my Hong Kong film big brothers Kozo and Sanjuro at Love HK Film (much love to the masters!), I do know a little something.  I’m not who people think of as the typical fan of Asian film, but I know that the actual audience for Asian film goes beyond the guys and includes all colors.  This is a space for anyone wanting to discuss Hong Kong, Korean and Japanese film, especially those of us living in the United States.  It’s  a little different for us. We can’t just go down the street to catch the newest John Woo film, so we are never on the cutting edge. Instead, we live in the land of Hollywood, and while I love the big summer blockbuster film, I also love my Asian film, which just isn’t as available.  But, armed with a region-free DVD player, we do ok.  This is a place for us (and every other fan of Asian film ) to do what we love to do:  talk about Asian film!.     So let’s talk!
